Ted Schubel with Info to Go- From VDOT: With a potential for freezing rain in the forecast early Monday morning, Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) crews are reporting to work Sunday to prepare equipment and materials in the 14-county Fredericksburg District. Road conditions may be icy and slick Monday morning. Conditions may be especially hazardous on interstate ramps, and bridges and overpasses, which freeze first due to lower surface temperatures. Motorists should be prepared to delay or avoid travel depending on weather and road conditions. Travelers are encouraged to check 511Virginia before starting a trip to see real-time road conditions in their area. VDOT crews will patrol roads overnight to spot and treat hazardous conditions. Sand and salt will be applied to roads as needed to melt ice and improve traction for drivers. Winter Weather Driving Tips · Keep your car’s windows, mirrors and lights clear of snow and ice. · Always wear your seat belt. · Leave a few minutes early. · Start out slowly in the lowest gear recommended by your vehicle’s manufacturer. · Be aware of potentially icy areas such as shady spots and bridges. · Keep a safe distance of at least five seconds behind other vehicles and trucks that are plowing the road. · Don’t pass a snowplow or spreader unless it is absolutely necessary. · VDOT’s Customer Service Center is open 24 hours a day to answer questions and take reports of road hazards at 800-FOR-ROAD (367-7623).
