Teena asked Uncle Paul to remember a story about Grandpa Nixon and he told her this story.... The times were tight when they first came to Illinois. The trains were used to transfer coal from on place to another. They lived near the railroad tracks and when the train would make its stop, they would relieve the train of a few pieces of coal to heat their home and cook by. Grandpa would take Paul and Denzil with him to help pick up the pieces he threw out and help carry it home. One time, Grandpa just didnt quite make it off the train before it pulled out. He had to ride it to the next stop, jump off, and walk all the way back to home. Needless to say, the boys never forgot the day that Grandpa just waved as he left them standing there watching him ride the train.
