Tehsildar among 9 injured in Bijbehara clash People Take To Streets Against Pesky Power Cuts; Police Flex Muscles On Protesters Islamabad (Anantnag), June 18: At least nine persons including a Tehsildar and two minor school girls were injured after violent protests erupted in Kanelwan area of Bijbehara in this South Kashmir district against the erratic power supply. Reports said people of Kanelwan came out on roads and blocked the Bijbehara-Pahalgam road to lodge their protest against the pesky powercuts and overcharging by the Power Development Department (PDD). “Police along with the Tehsildar Bijbehara came to the spot to pacify the protesters. However, police resorted to baton charge and ruthlessly thrashed the protesters,” the locals said. A motorcyclist Wakeel Ahmad Wani son of Ghulam Muhammad Wani of Wulerhama who was allegedly mercilessly beaten up by the police has been referred to a Srinagar hospital. “Police hit him on his head with gun-butts despite the fact that he was just a passer-by and was not a part of protesters,” the locals alleged.“They said police did not even spare the school girls who were returning home from school.” Later, people protested against the police highhandedness. They resorted to stone pelting on policemen who lobbed tear gas shells in turn. Several people including Tehsildar Bijbehara Abdul Rashid were injured in the clashes. Later senior officials from the districtadministration and police visited the spot and assured people that their grievances will be addressed. Police, however said that they were forced to resort to baton charge after the agitated locals pelted stones. “Several policemen and a Tehsildar were injured due to stone pelting after which we had to use force,” saida police official.
