Telling me my name is unique is not a compliment, despite your intent. It implies you arent cognizant that cultures and histories exist outside of North America. Ive been grappling with the idea of being less forthcoming with my name lately. Working in retail--especially the very friendly customer service style thats encouraged at my job--often leads customers to ask what my name is. This is nearly always followed by, what is that? What are you? Where are you from? That isnt information Im obligated to divulge, and yet Im somehow put into the awkward position of feeling rude if I dont. How is that right? The next time you hear a name for the first time, take a moment and ask yourself if anything aside from, thats beautiful is really warranted. Maybe try not commenting on it at all.
