Ten Ways to Keep it Healthy on Thanksgiving 1. Remember that most likely this is not your last meal, so there is no need to overdo it, as most likely you will be able to eat tomorrow and the day after! Gently nourish your body. 2. If you do overindulge, get back on track ASAP…that means the next meal or snack. 3. If you do indulge in “less-than-healthy” items, such as pies, cakes, eggnog, etc., use portion control. Then eat slowly and mindfully, and like your grandma told you, chew your food well. Can you get 10, 20 or 30 chews out of each bite? Try this experiment: the next bite of food you take, see how many chews you can get and see what happens with the last few chews! 4. Ask family members to bring sneakers and take a family walk after the meal and before dessert. 5. Make sure there are healthy options available if you are hosting, and bring one if you are not hosting. In healthy cultures known for longevity, people bring fruit when they visit others. How about bringing pomegranate arils (seeds) in a clear bowl? It makes for a festive accompaniment to the holiday table. 6. Have a moment of silence before the meal starts or use a blessing as a reminder to think about slowing down the eating process and eating healthfully and mindfully. 7. Fill your plate once. Enjoy every bite and then be done. 8. Focus on the social aspect of the holiday and building stronger bonds with your loved ones. Take some of the emphasis off of the food. 9. Move the family to the family room after the meal. This avoids lingering over the food, often a cue to keep on eating. 10. Eat with love, enthusiasm, and mindfulness. Love your body and check guilt at the door.
