Ten years ago today, President Ronald Reagan passed from this Earth. It seems like it was so much longer ago than that, as the scourge of Alzheimers had taken him out of public life many years before. He had a tremendous influence on our nation, and the world, with his determination to confront the evil of the Soviet Union, along with Margaret Thatcher and Pope John Paul II. Perhaps lesser remembered is his stand for Conservatism in the fall of 1964, at one of the lowest points of GOP political effectiveness. As Ron Robinson at Breitbart notes, a Reagan milestone was his nationwide-televised 1964 speech on behalf of Barry Goldwater for President, late in October, when it was well known that Goldwater had no chance of winning, that defines the extraordinary character of the man who would go on to become the 40th President of the United States. This quote stands out among many: “I think it’s time we ask ourselves if we still know the freedoms that were intended for us by the Founding Fathers…Whether we believe in our capacity for self-government or whether we abandon the American Revolution and confess that a little intellectual elite in a far-distant capital can plan our lives for us better than we can plan them ourselves.” If ever there was a time to have that question re-asked and answered anew... NOW is that time.
