Ten years ago, when I started HRA Studios & Foundation there was a group of kids, and their families, that formed a core unit. I spent time at their homes as more than a music teacher and joined in lifes celebrations and defeats with them. One of the Generation 1 kids had a dual love of music and science. In fact, he MADE his first electric guitar. A guitar that was autographed by Slash at one of our early Knitting Factory concerts. The years passed, and I watched this young man make his way in the universe. In this last year, his 19th on the planet, he continued to make a mark as a lighting designer for huge tours and shows, traveling the country and sharing his talent. A young man getting that far at 19 would surely reach even greater heights in his 20s, 30s and beyond. 2 weeks ago, he sent me a message asking to hang out and catch up. I told him that we would we do it soon. Unfortunately, that was not to be. On Friday night, I attended his funeral service. The guitar, with Slashs autograph still visible but marked by 8 years of life and wear, was placed in front of his coffin. Family and friends each took to the podium to express their feelings. His father gave an eloquent, yet heartbreaking, eulogy - finding the right words in a situation that would leave most grasping for air, let alone language. I have known many of you kids for a decade now, and I care for all of you. I dont want to attend any more funerals. Please. Please. Please.....When you get behind the wheel use your better judgement. Be careful. Be mindful. Be aware. This one is for Ian Bulbenko. youtube/watch?v=ebtC3ORg9fU
