Tensions are high in the Obi local government area of Nigerias - TopicsExpress

Tensions are high in the Obi local government area of Nigerias central Nasarawa state on 29 August, following successive days of communal violence in the region that has left as many as 60 people dead. According to local reports, violent confrontations between the regions Eggon and Fulani ethnic groups flared on 27 August in the Assakio locality. In successive days, violence spread to the neighbouring settlements of Tudun Adabu and Dedere, displacing scores of people. The exact reason for the confrontations remains unclear at this stage. Inter-communal violence such as this most recent incident is reported frequently in Nasarawa state. The violent unrest stems from long-standing disputes between the multiple and diverse tribal, ethnic and religious groups which populate the state. These disputes are frequently over contested land, particularly land disputes between the various agrarian and nomadic communities. Despite authorities deploying additional security forces, policing in the area remains sparse and largely ineffective. Accordingly, further clashes are likely to occur throughout the state. Due to various security concerns, clients are advised against non-essential travel to Nigeria, including Nasarawa state. Persons in the region should implement heightened security measures and monitor local developments closely. Clients in the affected areas should be prepared for an increased military presence at this time, as well as security checkpoints, on both primary and secondary roads, initiated by military and local community protection groups.
