Scott Turner to run for Texas House speaker” By Tim Eaton American-Statesman Staff A first-term, tea party-fueled state representative who played in the NFL said Friday that he wants Texas House Speaker Joe Straus’ leadership position. State Rep. Scott Turner, R-Frisco, announced his intentions on Twitter as conservatives from all over Texas gathered at the Sheraton Hotel near the Capitol for the Texas Public Policy Foundation’s Policy Orientation for the Texas Legislature. “I am excited to announce I have just filed to run for Speaker of the Texas House of Representatives for the 84th Legislative Session. God bless Texas!” Turner tweeted. Turner was part of the crop of tea-party backed freshmen in the Texas House last session that was, at times, at odds with the speaker. It’s unclear how much support Turner will garner among members, but in the moments following his filing, at least one of Turner’s classmates announced his support. State Rep. Matt Krause, R-Fort Worth, said Turner is “destined for bigger and better things.” He even urged Turner to run for governor, Congress, the U.S. Senate and the state Senate. If Turner moved into Krause’s district, Krause even would give up his seat. “I’d be his campaign manager,” he said. Unlike any other House members, Turner interacts dynamically with everyone in the chamber, moderate Republicans and Democrats included, Krause said. Straus’ office wasn’t immediately available for comment.
