Textual Criticism Some in scholarly circles have been eagerly awaiting the publication of a book whose author claims to have found a fragment in Greek of the Gospel according to Mark which can be dated to the late first century AD—to a time when the Apostle John might still have been alive at Patmos! The theory, based only on the supposed age of the manuscript, is that such an early manuscript would be closer to the autographs and thus even if it differs substantially from accepted Greek should be allowed to supersede all previous readings and manuscripts. We at the Society continue to uphold the New Testament which God has provided for more than two thousand years—believing that the original text has been providentially preserved to this day within the family of texts comprising the Textus Receptus.
