Please, particularly those of you so blinded by your hatred of Alex Salmond / the SNP to have actually paid attention to date (and dont get all shirty - youve made yourselves look like morons, and youre not, theres still time).....read this: NEW POWERS OFFERED BY WESTMINSTER These powers are powers to raise tax. Remember that it is a known fact with the new austerity cuts coming, the Scottish block grant will be cut by 4 to 6 billion pounds per year up to 25 billion pounds. This means the Scottish government will be in charge of using these new powers to raise tax to meet the short fall in budget. This will make them very unpopular despite it being not fault of their own. In essence we will be giving all of our money to Westminster, getting even less back from them, and then the taxes will go up too! We already give back more than we receive to the union, with a no vote it will be much much worse! If you think the librarys, public toilets and potentially Milnes High School closing at this stage are bad... imagine what its going to be like losing 4 billion per year from our budget... not even the tip of the iceberg yet. TUITION FEES The Scottish Government have done an amazing job retaining tuition fees... this is not down to having extra money from Westminster, this is down to The Scottish Government using the money in a way that helps us. Theres no way I could have afforded my own degree if I had to pay for it, and no way I will be able to afford to put Ellie and Olivia through university if they want to go. Education should not be a right of the super rich. You will hear people say, education is devolved etc, but the budget is not. We only have control of 7% of Scotlands money. THE NHS In a similar point I made above on tuition fees, we only control 7% of the budget, when the budget gets cut we will no longer have enough money to keep the NHS running as it is. Parts will be sold off and privatised. Our road system is crumbling up here, we could spend billions on fixing it instead! THE OIL It doesnt matter how much oil is left. Without oil our GDP is at a similar level to the remaining UK. Even if there is only 20-30 years of oil left like pessimistic predictions forecast, imagine what 5 million people could do with all of that money instead of 65 million. In the same amount of time Norway raised half a trillion as a wealth fund for the future, Westminster has squandered our oil and we are in 1.5 trillion pounds of debt. Why trust them to use the remaining oil wisely, they have done a terrible job so far. WE ARE LOOKED DOWN ON The Scots are treated like the poor relatives in the union, we are more stupid, poorer and generally a laughing stock to the financial and political elite in London. We are a joke to them, we deserve better. Do you think its fair that MPs have voted to give themselves a 21% pay increase in the last two years while we all have to suffer and make do. People cant afford to feed themselves in the oil capital of Europe and they give themselves a pay rise. It we vote no the elite will count their lucky stars in disbelief that the scots voted to keep giving them all of our money and resources. We will be the laughing stock of the world and quite rightly so. OUR POTENTIAL The Scots are a proud and intelligent people. We have so much potential and can offer the world so much. We can show the world that there is a different way where the government cares about people rather than lining their own pockets or those of big business. We can show the world we refuse to be dragged into illegal wars, the Saltire will become a symbol of democracy, fairness, hope and proof of a “better way”. I hope this will also lead on to our much loved neighbours in England, Wales and Ireland that they too can have a government that cares about the people. This speile is just a few of the many reasons I have to vote yes, but I dont want to make this message too long. All we have to do is vote yes and we can forge our own positive path into the future.
