Thank you Sam and Maggie at Workshop on the Web for such a lovely review! - thought sales had been very good the last couple of days The Gentle(ish) Art of Gelliping Creating unique and personal prints with your Gelli Plate Hilary Beattie ISBN 978-0-9573511-1-0 Published by Art Van Go Publishing Price £15 Available from hilarybeattie.co.uk or artvango.co.uk Hilary Beattie caught our attention last year with the publication of her book ‘Making It Personal Part 1’, a book that explored printing with paints and dyes to create colourful backgrounds for your work (reviewed in WOW in December 2013) and one which I regularly refer back to for practical advice and inspiration. This book is not the next in the ‘Making It Personal’ series but an extra that has slipped in between, looking at how to create a personal style using the Gelli Plate as a surface for printing. The Queen of Gelliping (a ‘verb meaning to play with, paint on, obsess over and generally have a jolly good time with a gelli plate’), Hilary takes us through this process with an abundance of enthusiasm and prolific output of work we have come to expect. For those of us who have Gelli Plates, we know that there is great opportunity to be had but Hilary explains to the uninitiated what the real benefit of owning this piece of equipment is. Foremost is its resilience to pressure and manipulation that allows you to create great prints, as well as being able to set to work instantly. Hilary launches into describing techniques and methods of working to get the most from your Plate, with fabric printing and overdyeing. Leaves, feathers and stems provide so many wonderful opportunities for beautifully detailed prints and used alongside stencils, stamps and other mark making items, you can create complex paper and cloth prints which can then be used as stand alone or incorporated into larger pieces. This is a fantastic book and so well illustrated with photographs every step of the way that there’s no excuse for not following the tutorials. Having done a workshop with Hilary on this subject, I can safely say that this book is like a virtual workshop. Although not as much fun as having her there in person, this is the next best thing and her voice, sense of humour and irreverence come through the pages.
