Dear Forestdale Families, It has come to my attention this evening that a substance believed to be mercury was found outside of school along the side of the building and sidewalk facing the elderly housing and McFadden Manner. We are aware that some of our students touched the substance and we have contacted their families to advised them of the precautions that should be taken. It is strongly recommended by the authorities that if your child came into contact with this substance they should be seen by a medical professional. The assumption is that students may have walked through the mercury so it maybe on the bottom of their shoes, If you think that your child has mercury on their shoes please seal them in a plastic bag and you will be instructed what to do at a later time. I have been here with the local fire, police and hazmat authorities as they perform the cleanup. Authorities will be on site tomorrow morning to complete the cleanup. At this time there is no evidence that the substance entered the school. School will be open tomorrow at the regular time but there will be restricted access to the building. Students will only be allowed to enter the building from Sylvan Street, all grades. Teachers will be here to help with an orderly entrance into the building. The access wrapping around the building will be blocked due to the cleanup. Please be patient as we work through this so we can have an orderly start to the school day. I have been with state and local officials all evening working on this plan to insure student safety.
