Thank you for the birthday wishes! When I was about four years - TopicsExpress

Thank you for the birthday wishes! When I was about four years old, I was under the impression that when you turned fifty, you suddenly become old and that you would then immediately pass away when you turned 100. (I could not understand why the local newspaper featured a photo of my great-grandfather when he turned eighty and was shocked to hear that not everyone people live that long. At one time, I also came to realize that my grandparents would eventually reach that age and told my mother (roughly translated from Danish) that it would be such a bummer if Grandmother passed away). Over the next few years, the cutoff for being old dropped rather dramatically. I remember, when I was a sophomore in college at age 19, being amazed at the anciency of a senior friend of mine who had taken some years off for travel and had turned twenty-five! Nevertheless, as unbelievable as it felt, those old birthdays came and went and denial only went so far. Up until now, at each milestone, I have increased the cutoff for being old by ten years. This time, however, I am increasing the cutoff to seventy to give me another twenty years of breathing room. When I turn seventy, the next adjustment may be to an even one hundred.
