Thank you for your support and encouragement. City Council meets at 6 p.m. Monday and 7 p.m. Thursday. On Monday, we hear the results of a study conducted over the past several months that will allow us greater opportunities for marketing our City. This study is a cornerstone of our ramped-up efforts to promote ourselves for economic investment, tourism, and sports events. For many years, our City has lacked a clear, modern identity that can be used for promotion. Council will also hear an update on the new parking deck. Our staff report says the deck’s design will create a vibrant urban space, with “lively pedestrian connections … which will turn dead-end and unsightly alleys into attractive and user friendly connections.” The deck will sit at the corner of Fourth and Cotanche streets. On Thursday, we will hear a report on plans by our Convention Center management to expand the center. The project, funded by hotel-tax revenues, will add new meeting rooms, a landscaped patio, new furniture and lobby renovations, and add historic elements. The work is scheduled for completion by August 2015. The total cost is estimated at about $4.1 million. In addition, I asked for information on two items Thursday. -- a report on sweepstakes enforcement. Charlotte plans to close 50 sweepstakes locations to comply with state law which outlaws them. I requested an update from our staff about our ongoing efforts to end these businesses in Greenville. In December, the state Supreme Court upheld the law ruling the businesses illegal. -- a report on budget cuts threatening City programs. I have asked for updates on the University Area Downpayment Assistance Program, as well as the Historic Façade Improvement grant. I am also concerned that our neighborhood liaison position may no longer be funded. MarionBlackburn
