Thank you to those who were able to attend the public meeting about the police station redevelopment last Thursday. Here is a summary of the points raised. Some of these identified issues overlap but I have tried to get an accurate picture of everyones comments. I have put in brackets the number of specific references to each point. I will use these to construct my response to Mendip and the Town council. Please email your objections (clearly stating OBJECTION in the title box) and suggestions to Mendip directly at [email protected] quoting reference number 2014/2211/FUL or drop to Oakfield Academy reception where I can collect letters for hand delivery. Objections/concerns 1. Site overdeveloped (5) 2. Conservation area issues (3) 3. Lack of parking (school staff/visitors and residents) (9) 4. Noise levels (3) 5. Access for emergency vehicles (6) 6. Biodiversity/wildlife concerns (4) 7. Increase in pedestrians (2) 8. Affordable Housing element is essential (7) 9. Needs better design - more in keeping with Frome. (5) 10. Road Safety for school children (10) 11. Congestion that ready exists (5) 12. Parking impact in surrounding areas - getting out of Lynfield Rd. Issues on Somerset Rd with additional Steiner Academy traffic. (2) 13. 900 children plus siblings/carers getting to school (3) 14. No real changes to original scheme that was refused. Only minor tweaks. (1) 15. Traffic study inaccuracies - particularly regarding police vehicle movements. (5) 16. Changes to zig zags/double yellows will decrease on street parking causing further congestion (1) 17. Plans lack clarity, impossible to determine measurements (2) 18. Cumulative impact on local infrastructure (drainage/school places/shopping/doctors/emergency services) (2) 19. Increase in road safety concerns will have impact on policing requirements. (1) 20. Dysfunctional site in a functioning community! (1) Acceptable/ Aspirations 1. Sustainable design (5) 2. Semi circle shaped road/development with 2 exits, wider, safer (3) 3. Safe parking/drop off/turning area (9) 4. Safe crossings across Oakfield Rd and Broadway (4) 5. Repositioning of bus stops/off road bus bay (3) 6. Improved facilities for increasing number of school children (3) 7. Development of site at an appropriate level better than leaving it as it is. (2) 8. Explore community housing/self build/community partners (3) 9. Explore alternative uses; allotments/village shop/tennis courts/gym/community centre/community gardens/school facilities. (4) 10. Safer walkways/wider pavements. (1) 11. Smaller development 30-35 dwellings, in line with national average per m2 (10) 12. Consideration of the local community, the needs of the area. (6) 13. Police should look to sell to a good value community purchase/alternative developer (2) 14. More green space (6) 15. Independent unbiased traffic study required (5) 16. Charging station for hybrid shuttle bus for pupils/staff/parents. (1) 17. Parking area made of gravel/ecobase not Tarmac (1) 18. Development should enhance the local community and be of benefit to it. (2) 19. Area has the opportunity to be the type of exciting, sustainable design that sets the standard for the future of house building in Frome.
