Thankful T1D Mom Post #9 As I was writing my last thankful post in the wee hours if the morning, it reminded me of something that I am very thankful for....the DOC (Diabetes Online Community). You see, when we left the hospital with our daughter and a bunch of syringes, insulin, test strips and everything else that had suddenly become essential to her health, I believed the training. I believed that if you figured carbs and did the math correctly and gave the correct insulin dose - tada! - perfect blood sugar numbers. I mean really. Im a smart person. How hard can this be? Right? I spent the first few months feeling like a complete failure. For some reason, her diabetes wasnt cooperating, so I must be doing something wrong! Someone finally steered me to the Children With Diabetes site. My first time to read through the boards was like a light bulb going off in my brain. I can still remember the wave of relief spreading through me. Its NOT just me! This stupid disease just doesnt always do what it is supposed to! Im so thankful for that virtual anchor in the storm! Im thankful for Kerri at Six Until Me who gives me incredible insight into what it feels like to be a person with T1D. Im thankful for Diabetes Dad who keeps me updates on research and gives me another parents perspective. Im thankful for the JDRF parents group where there is always someone up at 3 AM that is either waiting for a low to come up or a high to come down and willing to lend an ear to a virtual scream of frustration with, I know. BTDT, and you know they have. Some say that the internet is ruining our sense of community, but in my case, Im so thankful for the community that it opened up for me!
