A teratogen has been defined as a chemical that increases the occurances of structural and/ or functional abnormalities in offspring if administered to either parent before conception, the female during pregnancy or directly to the developing organism. This study reported that fluoride was teratogenic increasing the risk of congenital defects and the number of dead foetuses. The toxic mode of action was fluoride induced oxidative stress.
