Choose the first ten to come to your mind in a couple of minutes. Then tag me and some friends so we can see your list. Ok. What does this eclectic mix say about me? In no particular order and with a short explanation... 1. La Nausée by Jean Paul Sartre- Classic piece of existentialism that left me with the eternal dilemma of the seduction and disillusionment of the perfect moment. 2. Don Quixote by Miguel de Cervantes- When I realized that literature was both pure play and beautiful craft and the first time I laughed out loud hysterically reading a canonical novel. 3. Awareness by Anthony de Mello- I grew up about 10 years reading this short, no nonsense book. It enriched my perspective and my faith. 4. Porqué escribí by Enrique Lihn- I need to include this anthology because it houses my favorite poem of all time, Celeste Hija de la Tierra. 5. The Seven Habits of Highly Successful People by Steven Covey- Sorry for the drop back to earth here, but I read this book in my early teens and it helped me formulate the operating framework I still use today. 6. Las Odas Elementales by Pablo Neruda- The ultimate guide to finding exquisite beauty in the mundane. 7. The Birth of Venus by Sarah Dunant- Im including this one because of its electrifying first chapter. 8. Everymans Way of the Cross by Clarence Enzler- A beautiful invitation to loving surrender and total trust. 9. Leaves of Grass by Walt Whitman- I wrote my thesis on this and the exuberance in these pages thrill me. 10. Two more books: Born on a blue day by Daniel Tammet and The Curious Incident of the dog in the night-time by Mark Haddon- these books allowed me the possibility to get into my sons autistic brain and understand a little better how he sees the world.
