Thanks Lord Murdeshwara, for making it possible for me last month to visit and see this awesome sight. Yes, it is the statue of Lord Murdeshwar (Lord Shiva). It is World’s 2nd tallest statue. Meditative Murdeshwara inhabits majestically this hillock which was earlier a complete island surrounded from all sides by the sea though situated just near to the shore. Later, it was connected from one side by road by a devotee. Here goes the ancient story of Murdeshwara. When by devoted worship and rigorous penance of the Lord Shiva, the Lankan King Ravana secured the “ATMALINGA” (capable of removing all sins of sinners) from Him and set out to his country through the path of West Coast, all devtas who got frightened to know that got together and prayed Ganapathi (the Vighnharta, the banisher of all hurdles) to prevent King Ravana from taking home the ATMALINGA. Ganpathi disguised in the form of Brahmin Vatu succeeded in placing light filled ATMALINGA at Gokarna on West Coast. Ravana in anger and dejection attempted to remove the Linga in vain. In sorrow and frustration he threw cloth and thread of Linga to various places. The sacred cloth fell over Kanduka Hill assuming the form of wonderful Mradeshwar Linga. The bright hill that has formed the base of Mradeshwara Linga looks like a ball and that is why it is called KANDUKA HilL. As it is surrounded by sea, it looks beauuuuuuuuuutifulLLLLLLLLL. Hill is full of trees and plants, caves and caverns, and many varieties of birds. When Lord Maheshwara reached Mradeshwar, he saw in the Linga his own self which was full of light and power of fulfilling all the wishes of devotees. When sacred cloth that wrapped Prana Linga had fallen on Kanduka Hill, it had got transformed into a Linga without a pedestal. Lord Maheshwara who came from Kailash summoned gods and got a pedestal prepared by Vishwakarma for it. Trampling of cloth by Ravana is called “MRIDA” that’s why this place is called Mrideshwara. The linga seen like decorated with Rudrakshi would always be there. There is another story behind this name. It goes like, MRADA also meant Happiness. Therefore, this place with Mradeshwar be known as Lord of Happiness “MURDESHWARA”. It is said that those who worship Mradeshwar with devotion & piety would get all their wishes fulfilled. MUST VISIT a place. Har Har bhole Shankara !! Om Namaha Shivay!!!
