Thanks, Terri Bradshaw, for giving me homework at 9:30 on a school night. Heres my top 10 (as of today): 10. Gone With the Wind-Read unassigned in high school. Positive proof I could read a book more than 100 pages long. Opened my eyes to how much more the book had to say than the movie, which was great. 9. On the Road-Turned me on to post-WWII literature. I really liked its wide-open style. 8. The Right Stuff-Tom Wolfes best-seller about true American heroes. 7. Stargirl-Just one of Jerry Spinellis adolescent books that speaks more to grownups than it does to kids. 6. Carl Sandburgs Lincoln Biography Anthology-Long, but easy to read, Sandburg made me feel like I knew Lincoln as a person instead of an icon. 5. All Quiet on the Western Front-Best book on war ever written. Incredibly moving. 4. Where the Red Fern Grows-I can still picture Mr. Langford reading it to a rowdy group of 7th graders a long, long time ago. Great story. Dont lie-you cried, too. 3. Where the Wild Things Are-Dont we all want to be Max? Love of this book made me a reader. A big thanks to my aunt Lois, my preschool teacher, for reading it every time I asked. 2. The Biblical book of Proverbs-The ultimate authority on how to live. Filled not only with wisdom, but all aspects of humanity, including humor. Where else can you find a reference of twisting a dogs ear to minding your own business? 1. The Grapes of Wrath-First read in high school because I saw a picture caption in my history book. Made me realize there were big, good books written about people I could relate to...my people. Read again 30 years later and still rate it as my life-changing read. Honorable Mention:I am a Bunny by Richard Scarry. Thats for you, Katie Crabtree I pass this challenge on to Derrick Crabtree Melissa Harris Crabtree Bert Evans, Lesa Franklin Cindy Karnowski Beth Gardner Brown Katie Crabtree EJ Housam Umicevic and all my former AT students...
