Thanks so much to ISS alum and Birmingham artist Clayton Colvin ‘95, who talked to students and faculty today about the ways that patterns, space, shapes, and lines influence his abstract paintings. “My life is very patterned,” he said. “I take my kids to school, I do dishes, I do laundry, I paint, we have soccer practice. There are all these patterns, but then something happens to break the routine, and that’s what I find interesting. A lot of my work is coming out of the patterns that I see around me.” He tries to infuse his works with drawing elements that add a sense of fragility and amazement. “It’s sometimes hard to get a grip on abstract painting,” he said. “I want my paintings to feel like they are expanding, and I try to infuse them with a feeling of thankfulness.” Colvin credits Indian Springs with making him aware of the beauty of language, poetry, and cadence, which permeate his work. “In some ways, the pleasure of sitting and reading a book is comparable to the pleasure of seeing a painting and having that experience of joy and understanding,” he said. He encouraged students to pursue their own unique artistic interests. “Follow your curiosity—and not someone elses—where it takes you,” he said. betapictorisgallery/artists/clayton-colvin/
