Thanks to Crystal Chitwood for inspiring me to write this and send it to the FCCs inbox on the matter of Net Neutrality. If youre interested, you can send a comment to them as well via FCC.gov/comments or at their email at [email protected]. The Internet as it stands today is the same as any other timeless treasure that was destroyed and is sorely missed by all. Stories tell of Passenger Pigeons enormous migratory flocks blotting out the sky in Northern America, an awesome sight, never to be seen again by the early 1900s. A 2006 expedition searched the Yangtze for six weeks, but didnt find any Baiji White Dolphins, marking an end to a species that had been part of our history since ancient times. Whether in centuries past or just the last decade, humanity has steadily removed important features that it took for granted. The only difference today is that its not too late to stay our hand. As greed descends upon what may be the last wall between freedom and the illusion of freedom in the entire world, we can as a species hesitate, think, and turn to a better alternative. Protecting the weak multitudes from great and rich powers that seek to secure their reign with the sacrifice of unwitting lambs is as noble an endeavor as any of us can hope to undertake, and today you have the opportunity to bear that shield and hold that flag not just for North America, but for the world. The impact the decisions you make on this matter will stretch far beyond our coasts, as the Internet is a canvas for humanity to express itself on, and that expression is precious beyond measure. If you allow anyone to purchase the right to access information faster, or better, you are committing a crime against humanity. I implore you to think not of yourself, or for America, or for the corporate or the public, but for our species. Our development depends upon communication more than anything else, and the Internet is our single most powerful tool for that. To injure the leg may not harm the hand, but the body suffers the same. Please do not cripple us all.
