Here is our answer: That job, at least in the WWFD, is a position that a Walla Walla firefighter must test for and be promoted to. First, a training manual must be completed. This includes written and practical scenarios. The candidate must show proficiency in all areas, such as equipment operation and location, pump operation, nozzle pressures, friction loss, etc. Completing this manual qualifies the firefighter to be an “acting engineer,” meaning they can do the job if that position needs to be filled temporarily. In order to be promoted to the position permanently, the candidate must take a practical test which also includes a geography portion. It is critical to be proficient with streets and address numbers in the city. Then, just like an entry level job, an eligibility list is created. If an engineer position becomes available, the top three candidates are interviewed for the position. A CDL is not required, as all members of the WWFD undergo specialized Emergency Vehicle Accident Prevention (EVAP) training.
