Thanks to Tony Conte, BHS 62, for the following information it was in association with an email on the artillery batteries on the old CZ. BTW/FYI, Grandin Butch West Tony talks about & I attended & graduated from Bay County High School in Panama City in 1962. Butch retired from the Air Force & lives in Anchorage, AK, we visited with Butch a couple of years ago when we visited AK. During the summer the inseparable three some -- my self (Tony Conte), Gene Despain, and Grandin West would go swimming at Amador. We carried flashlights inside our towels, to hide them from the MPs. We explored all the tunnels and turrets entering the battery near the beach entrance and the other one, closer to the Smithsonian site. Eventually a lighted museum was created with figures dressed as soldiers and male nurses. Frankly the place was dangerous due to the very long staircase to enter plus unexpected high drops/pits. Even when lit, visibility was on the poor side. Never saw any animals, but the potential for snakes, spiders or who knows what was always there. Years later, with my stepson, now Dr. Franco, who was only 13 or 14 at the time, saw a wild pig or Zaino while climbing the road that leads to the radar. He ran like mad down the hill scared to death.
