Thanks to his robot assistants, Harvard Universitys Michael Desai was able track the evolution of 64 different strains of yeast through 500 generations. Even though the strains had different initial genomes and different subsequent mutations, they all ended up with the same adaptation. Desais conclusion: fitness evolution follows a predictable trajectory even though sequence-level adaptation is stochastic.
