Thanksgiving brings to mind so many great memories .. Many great Family dinners and such . I want to share with you what is one of my best Thanksgiving memories... that was also spent hundreds of miles from home. It was almost 20 years ago..Braden had joined the Navy and was stationed at the Great Lakes Training facility north of Chicago. He was in boot camp and was going to miss Thanksgiving and Christmas away from home for the first time ever.. So I decided to fly to Chicago rent a car and drive to the Navy Base and spend the Thanksgiving Holiday with him . He only had one day off with a pass and that was Thanksgiving Day. I guess I hadnt planned the trip very well , because of the holiday everything was closed. Braden was able to get me post housing for a place to stay.. Thanksgiving Day we left the base looking for a place to eat shortly after noon. Like I said everything was closed except for a couple of 7-11 stores , I told Braden we may end up eating cold turkey sandwiches from the convenience store for dinner. Then about 5 miles outside of the of the Base on the way to Milwaukee we spotted a cafe ...and it was open... We stopped and yes they were serving Thanksgiving Dinner.. In fact it was a great dinner with all the trimmings , turkey ,ham, sweet potatoes , homemade rolls, pumpkin pie ,everything you would expect. They were also busy all the tables and booths were full. Lots of other sailors in uniform who also were not going to be home for the holiday. We both ate a great meal with great service ..they had a full waitress staff of maybe 15 girls waiting tables and this was a holiday ..Thanksgiving Day.. When we finished I asked for a check , and the waitress told me there was no charge .. Thanksgiving Dinner was FREE..They did this every year and she said they would probably serve about 1000 meals before they closed for the day. She said they feed anyone who showed up until all the food was gone. The restaurant was called The Full Moon , I dont know if it is still open . The owner was an immigrant from Egypt and had been in the U.S. for a little over 30 years. He told me this was his small way of paying back for his chance to live in this great country and to honor the Navy kids who were close by and didnt get to go home. He was also serving some homeless people.. To this day this still stands out as one of my best Thanksgiving Holidays ever.... Happy Holidays to everyone. GaleB https://youtube/watch?v=acnt3r6z5ns
