That Guy’s Diary_ @ershards Episode 7 and 8 Many unanswered questions revolted through my brains as I drove to my apartment. I wish I knew the answers. I could pay with my life to get the answered. After all even Sandra died. I closed the door behind me as I ventured into the lonely house. Meanwhile, Pauline was at pains elucidating to Pet what had transpired in our short moment in the bedroom. Pet trust me, your friend and I had absolutely nothing between ourselves to warrant that reaction she explained. I was with him in the kitchen, then left to come have a change of shoes. I saw him exit the kitchen and thinking that he was bored to tears I allowed him have a look at my photo album. I was just talking to him when he all of a sudden screamed and bolted as he dropped the album back to the drawn drawers. Pet was befuddled too, had it not been for the drizzle I know he would trail me as fast as he could. Nonetheless, Pet tried to reassure the now flabbergasted Pauline. She made for the dinner table and swig her wine emptying its contents. She asked Pet if he needed any more wine. Pet gladly agreed. She half filled the two glasses and gave one to Pet. While in the apartment, I switched on all the lights. I was afraid of what next in store for me or where it would come from. First, Sandra’s mom calls to remind me about the damn anniversary, and encouraging me to move on with my life. Then I meet this strange woman who is hell-bent on scratching my healing scars to new wounds. I sobbed, hoping that the house would crumble and swallow my life with it. I gazed at myself curiously on the mirror hanging on the guest’s bathroom that was on the ground floor of my apartment. I was an experienced wild man, who in the course of my life had met perverts, criminals, and layabouts but never saw them cry. This man in a blue suit had so much fortitude the past year. This had been drained within a span of an hour. In that mirror, I only saw a silhouette of myself. Pet and Pauline heard a knocking, and then a dog barking. She fought the nauseating effect of the wine they had been taking. It was getting dark and the lights hadnt been turned on. The mood didnt require it anyway. Pauline fumbled her way to the door. A key was in the keyhole, trying to unlock the door. What? What? She was thinking in quick succession: Bradox. Then Davies. Then neighbour. Then car accident. Then Bob. But Bob just cant have my door keys. So that cancels the probability of an accident. Davies my elder brother should be in jail, he couldnt have finished his four year sentence that first. My neighbour, Kevin would have called if he wanted anything as always. And Bradox! He just called this afternoon to say he was going to be away for a week or something! Within as splash second the door had been opened and shut. The light Bradox put on blinded her. Damn you Brad! Pauline shouted. What is it you want from me? After everything you have put me through you still have the nerve to bulge into my house? Without an invitation or a search warrant, Ooh God, what a mess did I allow in my life? ...you know what Kevin, leave my house, leave and drop the keys I gave you. This very afternoon you told me it’s over. That we needed to go separate ways. That you and my brother Davies, May God give him the strength to go through the jail term, Have no more business interests together? Your wickedness Brad, your greed, your deceit! You are an idiot! Brad slapped her, and shoved her to the ground. Pet, who had been watching everything unfold, came fast to liberate the now subdued Pauline. He gave Brad a jab on the torso. Brad staggered and stood to fight off Pet. Pet is well built; a darling to many women due to his athletic body was no match for a drunken police officer in the name of Brad. Pet had trained as an airforce cardet before he was discharged due to indiscipline. He carefully, escaped the blow from Brad. Held his other hand and using his antelope long legs wrestled him to the ground and sat on the now insultive Brad. Pet tried not to look astonished by the sudden turn of events. He stirred his head slowly to the side, not staring into Pauline’s side, as if it were indecorous to do so, as if he had all the time in the world, as if Brad was not a living thing on the now freezing floorboards. You Okay Pauline? Pet asked.Yes Peter, thanks to you! This bustard is a criminal. Brad snapped away as Pet woke to help Pauline regain her bearing, reached his hand to the door knob as if to open it. The lights flicked and went off. Let me get you to the sofa, Pet said. Pauline moved her head from side to side. There is nothing she wanted most than to see Brad’s face leave the house. She wanted to sink to the tiles, to ooze onto the floor. Sit here in the sofa and dont move, Pet warned. Wheres the light? On the wall. she said with a faint raspy voice. She was shivering. Pet swiped the switch. She put a hand up in front of her face to ward off the light. Instinctively, she was embarrassed and did not want to be seen. Brad had meanwhile sneakily escaped in the darkness. He too was discomfited of the protection that her estranged girlfriend had received from this man he didnt know and had never met. At nine oclock that night, Pet left Pauline’s apartment, momentarily relieved that she would at least be safe. They had called for a new door lock and had it changed. Out of paranoia, and fear of being left alone in the house, Pauline supplied Pet an extra key just in case she needed his service that night. Pet received congratulations from Pauline’s neighbour Kevin who had overheard the pushing and shoving earlier and the ensuing change of door locks. But it was not congratulations he wanted. He wanted a drink. The pubs around here were not familiar. He had a bottle he had hidden somewhere in his house. “I am seeing you to your place, Pauline directed as they moved down the staircases. I think we can use my car, if you can drive a small auto, will you? They entered the red Volkswagen jetta sedan and Pet drove with extra care with the light machine. It was not was he was used to driving. He had been accustomed to his Double Cabin Pickup, which was something compared to this small red sedan. The rain had now subsided. The drive was easy, within twenty minutes Pet pulled up and fortunately got an empty parking beside his four-wheel. Inside the house, the telephone rang a serrated edge in the silence of the dining room. Peter answered it immediately. No comment, he said No need I dont think so I am fine. No comment. He returned to its cradle the receiver as he messaged his forehead with his thick fingered hands. Pauline watched him inquisitively... Episode 9 coming shortly...hope you enjoyed?
