That flash of red you spy in the trees may not always be a cardinal; this male scarlet tanager (pictured in trees) was spied in the woods behind our Wildlife Resource Center in Wonder Lake. They are typically hard to find as they like to stay high in the woodland canopy. During spring migration and summer, listen for the raspy, distinctive chick-burr call note. Females are dark-winged and yellowish-green.
