That story did happen to me when a deaf women who has diabetic and use less qualify interpreter who misunderstand what doctor said and interpreted wrong information to her about the amount of medications she need to take. She went home and took medications base on what that lousy interpreter told her. Then one day she has guts that something not right, she called me and asked to go to doctor with her and that same ungrateful interpreter showed up at the doctor office wonder why I was there. I told her that the client has the right to ask me to go with her. There she interpreted so lousy and misunderstood all the way. When I voice my concern, she almost cry then she left the doctor office and put us all in awkward position. Anyway, we did not have no interpreter but instead I asked doctor if its OK if I write and read back and forth. I explain to him what the client said about medications and all that she was supposed to take. Guess what? Doctor said NO, That is wrong information!! If the client has not asked me to go with her, she would have died from took wrong amount of medications at wrong time. Can u believe it? I did express my concern to someone about this. We here in Richmond, VA have one Interpreter agency that tend to send less qualify interpreters to doctors, hospital etc. That agency does not care, all she care about is money and seems like our health and our well being or almost died does not matter to them. It is all about GREEDY. We, Deaf people need to stand up and fight them!!!! So sorry it had to happen to your friend but it happened everywhere if we do not speak up!! SMH!!!!
