Thats a lot of money... $674m The comptroller’s report, which the office said was the first in a series, centers on claims against five city agencies: the Police Department, the Health and Hospitals Corporation, the Department of Parks and Recreation, the Department of Environmental Protection and the Department of Sanitation. The current year’s budget sets aside $674 million to cover the costs of settlements and judgments from lawsuits against the city, the report noted, a figure that is expected to rise to $782 million by 2018. “The projected cost of legal judgments and claims now equals roughly $80 per resident,” Mr. Stringer’s office said. Payments from lawsuits and claims against the Police Department, for example, rose nearly 31 percent from fiscal year 2008 through 2013, to $137.2 million, a figure that the report said was the highest of any city agency. ClaimStat, the report said, would allow the Police Department to assess the performance of precincts. For example, when adjusted for the crime rate, the Bronx is home to the four precincts with the highest number of personal-injury claims against the police, the report said. There were additional “hot spots” for claims in precincts in central Brooklyn, the North Shore of Staten Island, Harlem and the Lower East Side of Manhattan, the report said.
