Thats right.. No clubs open for the long weekend..Congrats Mayor for killing tourism WASAGA BEACH — The gathering storm clouds on a late Friday afternoon weren’t the only things casting an ominous pall over the world’s freshwater beach. The tenants who ran the Dardanella, Copa Cabana, and Bananas Beach Club found the locks changes and eviction notices taped to the door, as three of the four bars in the main end of the beach were shut down at the start of the August long weekend. Municipal officials found themselves in a delicate situation early in the morning after the tenants showed up at town hall to give their side of the story, said the town’s chief administrative officer George Vadeboncouer. Vadeboncouer said the landlord, Wasaga Beach Waterfront Developments, and found out the tenants “were in a significant amount of arrears.” The closing of the bars on the cusp of the long weekend would appear to be another hurdle to Wasaga Beach, as it struggles to regain tourists to the community during a cool summer — and after a year where two of the bars were shuttered for the season. “It’s unfortunate the timing… (but) the amount (in arrears) is significant and the town can’t intervene,” said Vadeboncouer. “It’s a private matter and the town has to be careful.” However, he said, both he and Mayor Cal Patterson had urged both parties to sit down, “and I think there are still discussions going on between the tenant and the landlord.” The eviction notice taped to the door of the Bananas Beach Club indicated more than $120,000 was owed to the landlord. The eviction notices for the other two bars could not be observed without trespassing. Only the Wasaga Sandbar remains open. “This is taking out 75% of the bars, and that has an impact — it’s tough,” acknowledged Vadeboncouer. “The town’s role will be trying to bring the parties together… maybe they could put their differences aside until next week.” A call to the tenant has not yet been returned. In May, Wasaga Beach Waterfront Developments representative Joseph DeTommaso told the municipal council his company was “prepared to restore confidence in the site. “Were addressing the negative issues, and focused on implementing positive changes, said DeTommaso at the time. In May, DeTommaso said the past winter was especially punishing to the buildings, and considerable work was needed to bring them up to snuff leading into the Victoria Day weekend.
