The song was actually written by lyricist Arthur Freed and composer Nacio Herb Brown for the Hollywood Revue of 1929, one of the first talkie musical films. And the film Singin in the Rain is a story about Gene Kellys character transitioning from silent movie star to singer in a talkie. Hes joined by Debbie Reynolds and Donald OConnor for energetic song and dance and an entertaining plot. Kelly was the man of the hour with this movie. Hes singin, dancin, directin, and choreographin the film. It took a toll, however. He performed the title tune while suffering with a 103-degree fever. Maybe he should have stayed inside with a little chicken soup instead of being out in the rain singin...
