The 2015 New Zealand Heavy Weight Championships was again a tremendous success. The 1st International Highland Games of 2015 was run by The Waipu Caledonian Society. The Huge event has seen a reformat in the running of the games and it greatly helped increase the Awesome atmosphere on the day. The on field officials were again led by NZ heavy events legend Patrick Hellier. A great line up of athletes from Australia, Scotland and New Zealand were on hand to compete for the win, Eight Athletes in total. The overall placings down to 4th place were, 1st NZ Champion Jono Macfarlane, 2nd Aust Moe Westmoreland, 3rd Scotland John MacLeod, 4th (2nd NZ) Reuben de Jong. Some great moments from the day included Jonos dominance in the 22lb open stone. Scotlands John and Australias Moe battle in the Heavy and Light Hammers, John taking the 16lb and Moe the win on the 22lb. Jono also very dominant on the LWFD. Reuben the only athlete to turn the mighty Waipu Caber. Moe clearly dominant on the Light Sheaf and current NZs Strongest Man Colm Wolf taking out the 56 WOB. The challenge event at the end of the day was 160lb farmers carry for max distance with the record of 125m smashed by NZs Giant Reuben de Jong. The last surprise of the day was the top 5 Heavies taking on the NZ TUG O WAR champions, best of 3. the 1st round went to the Heavies with a very dominant win. Round 2 saw a great sporting moment when the Tuggers put in everything they had, the heavies held strong for what seemed like 20min, than with a CRACK! the sound of a gun going off, the rope snapped, with Athletes falling to the ground. A fantastic day was had by all and a HUGE thank you to the Waipu Calendonian Society for all the hard work they put in all year to run this great event.
