The 23-year-old Spaniard, who arrived at Old Trafford two years - TopicsExpress

The 23-year-old Spaniard, who arrived at Old Trafford two years ago, was routinely criticised about his inability to assert from his crosses and was also questioned about his slender frame. De Gea, who featured in the PFA Premier League Team of the Year last term after guiding United to their 20th title, believes his detractors were overly harsh. If I am honest, yes (the criticism was unfair), De Gea told Uniteds official magazine Inside United. I was very young and I had arrived at a new club from another country. I was learning a whole new language, I was adapting to a new style of football and new team-mates. Thats a lot to take in and its natural that it will take a little bit of time to settle. It wasnt easy hearing this criticism but I tried to use it to motivate me and make me stronger. I think I have improved as a goalkeeper because of it, actually. I like to think that from bad things you can derive good results. As far as injuries are concerned, United will be without Michael Carrick, Marouane Fellaini and Phil Jones for the trip to Cardiff.
