The 4th step in our spiritual ladder climb is "Blessed are they - TopicsExpress

The 4th step in our spiritual ladder climb is "Blessed are they who Hunger and Thirst for Justice, for they shall be satisfied" This is a biggie ... and from here on in, these beatitudes are a step to spiritual perfection. The rest of the beatitudes from here on up demand active behaviour. Because of the twisting in society - people look at this (and I was no exception) and think _ "YES >> I WANT JUSTICE!!" often we hear the plight of Jews from the time of Christ echoed in our day "OH LORD, HOW LONG MUST I WAIT????" .. begging for a Messiah to save them from the evils of the day. But this is a spiritual climb for the individual - NOT the rest of the world. First of all, to "hunger and thirst" after justice: means a strong and continuous desire of progress in religious and moral perfection, as a result the reward of which will be the very fulfilment of the desire, the continuous growth in holiness. Again - to thirst after justice is a thirst for ourselves to be perfect - like God ... I am thinking back to those meditations from "My Daily Bread" ..... those "mind your own business ones" The reason we can not see what is really required of ourselves, is because we are too busy looking at other people and saying "they are to blame for ALL THIS" And then I think back to Pius X "the reign of Satan is due to the easy going weakness of Catholics" ... If Satan reigns (and he does) ... then I am not a saint. What is the gift of this 4th Beatitude - FORTITUDE If I thirst to be perfect, then God gives me the strength to be so. If I never let a moment go by as not an opportunity to live the Gospels (in my eagerness to be perfect) ... then God gives me the strength, to turn the other cheek, to forgive, to offer up, to keep my mouth shut etc. etc. etc. So to Hunger and Thirst for Justice is a thirst for inner perfection. Not to want to see wrongs made right.
