The 51st Veterans Day Service will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 9. Our guest speaker will be Dr. Jocelyn Benson, who is the founder and director of Military Spouses of Michigan. This is a service of thanksgiving to express our appreciation for all who have served their country. Our celebration will include music from the Cathedral Choir with traditional trumpet and bagpipe selections. A reception with light refreshments will follow the service. Jocelyn Benson was named dean of the Wayne State University Law School in June, after having served as interim dean since December 2012. Prior to serving as dean, she was an associate professor of law and associate director of the law schools Damon J. Keith Center for Civil Rights. As a military spouse herself, one of Dean Bensons greatest accomplishments is Military Spouses of Michigan. She is a founding member and president of the organization. Military family members in Michigan can feel alone or isolated. The purpose of the organization is to change that notion by providing a network and support services, such as pro bono legal services, educational and employment services, social gatherings and community support projects. In 2012, Military Spouses of Michigan was selected to represent Michigan in the Presidential Inaugural Parade in Washington, D,C. Ninety military family members and service members marched in this event. Recently, Dean Benson was honored as one of 27 Esteemed Women of Michigan. This program recognizes women who have excelled in their professions, risen above intolerable circumstances, developed the means to help others or have become inspirational figures for the younger generation. An expert on civil rights law, education law and election law, Dean Benson is the youngest woman ever to lead a U.S. law school and has garnered numerous honors for her work. She is widely quoted on those subjects in local, regional, national and international media and has written numerous book chapters and law review articles, as well as her own book, State Secretaries of State: Guardians of the Democratic Process. Prior to joining the law faculty, Dean Benson clerked for Judge Damon J. Keith on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit. She also worked as a legal assistant to Nina Totenberg at National Public Radio and investigated hate groups and hate crimes for the Southern Poverty Law Center. After earning a bachelor-of-arts degree from Wellesley College, she earned a master of philosophy degree as a Marshall Scholar at Oxford University and her law degree from Harvard Law School. All are welcome at this special service, and it is a wonderful opportunity be part of this historic event in this historic setting. The cathedral was designed in the 14th century English style of Gothic architecture, and provides a beautiful visual setting for this service. Complimenting this unique setting is a world-class choir accompanied by one if the finest pipe organs in Michigan. From the solemn procession accompanied by bagpipes and organ, to the buglers playing of Taps and Last Post, to the concluding hymn, this service will be an inspiring and fitting tribute to all those who have served our country. If you are part of a Military, Police and Fire, Veterans or Civic Organization and wish to make arrangements for your group to carry flags in the procession and reserve a section of seats for them, or just for more information, contact the Cathedral office at 313.831.5000. Following the service all are welcome to join us for a reception with light refreshments.
