The AFL has sent a message to clubs saying that the days of runners taking messages to players on the ground are numbered. The league dislikes the look of so many people on the ground, and are looking to cut the number of runners and potentially police when they can and cannot go onto the ground Extreme circumstances would see the AFL scrap the role of the runner altogether. It looms likely that one runner of both teams can only be on the ground at the one time, meaning the second runner must wait until the the other comes off the field. The other option would be to allow runners onto the field at stoppages after a goal is scored however they must be off the field before play resumes again. - the age
