The ALS Association funds embryonic stem cell research. What - TopicsExpress

The ALS Association funds embryonic stem cell research. What happens is that a womans egg is harvested. It is then fertilized with sperm in a lab. At that point, a human life exists. Its a baby, although a microscopic one. The baby is then frozen and placed in freezers. (This is a very simplified explanation.) This is done as part of In Vitro Fertilization. Doctors who are trying to help a couple get pregnant will harvest and fertilize a lot of eggs and then freeze them. When its time, he will implant several in hopes of at least one surviving to be delivered. If too many survive then the woman has to abort the extras. This leaves many embryos frozen for a long time, so some researchers will buy them and dissect them for research. They harvest the babys cells like a farmer harvests cotton, in a sense. The ALS Association is willing to fund such research even though the research ends up killing the baby. They say that they only have one ESC research project going and that it is funded privately, but theyre still approving of the moral issue and could fund other ESC research with your money. Whether you are Catholic or not, if you want to support ALS research in a morally acceptable way that doesnt end up exchanging the life of one for another then you can support the John Paul II Medical Research Institute.
