The Absence of Women? : Peace Talks (and silences) in Northern Ireland and Bosnia-Herzegovina Dr Maria-Adriana Deiana School of Politics, International Studies and Philosophy DATE: Wednesday 2nd April at 4pm VENUE: Room 24.0G.002, 24 University Square Since the signing of UN Security Council resolution 1325, the issue of Women, Peace and Security, has been on the international agenda in the field of conflict and peace. Evidence from post-conflict contexts worldwide indicates that, despite the rhetorical commitment to mainstreaming gender in all aspects of post-conflict transformation, the role of women’s groups remains nevertheless marginalised. Drawing on over a decade of peacebuilding efforts in Bosnia-Herzegovina (BiH) and Northern Ireland (NI), this paper addresses the evident disjunction between official discourses and political processes, and the efforts of feminist activists and women’s groups to make their voices and perspectives visible in the respective peacebuilding projects. Combining key findings of the author’s research in BiH and NI, this paper seeks to make sense of developments and set-backs in the Women, Peace and Security agenda and poses the question of whether a more nuanced and complex understanding of gender in peacebuilding might be viable.
