The Affordable Care Act (ACA) of 2010 (Public Law 111-148) was created to expand access to affordable health care coverage for all Americans, lower costs and improve quality and care coordination. Beginning January 1, 2014, the ACA’s individual shared responsibility provision requires each individual to: maintain minimum essential coverage (MEC), qualify for an exemption, or make a payment when filing Federal income tax return. Those who are currently receiving care from the VA meet the ACA requirement for 2014. Those Veterans who are not in the VA health care system are being encouraged to check the VA out. For those Veterans who are not eligible, are encouraged to look into the Marketplace which is designed to help individuals find health insurance that meets individual needs and budget. This can be accessed at healthcare.gov. Marketplace plans and premium information will be available beginning October 1, 2013. The Veterans Health Administration has a dedicated website to address ACA and Veterans Benefits. For additional information, Veterans should call 877-222-VETS or visit va.gov/health/aca/index.asp.
