The African Union and the African Development Bank have no shame! - TopicsExpress

The African Union and the African Development Bank have no shame! How do they explain why the upcoming Fourth Conference on Climate Change and Development in Africa (CCDA-IV) will be hosted in Marrakesh (Morocco)? I can understand why the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa would see nothing wrong with this. I dont expect UNECA to be principled on matters that relate to the development of this continent. But for the AU Commission to take this conference to Morocco is to undermine the plight of the people of Western Sahara by giving legitimacy to Moroccos continued arrogance. The occupation of Western Sahara by Morocco has left hundreds of thousands of Sahrawi disenfranchised, and somewhere between 90,000 and 200,000 have fled as refugees, most of whom currently live in the Tindouf refugee camp in Southern Algeria, and in similar camps in Mauritania. The Moroccan army has established a segregation wall over 2000km long and surrounded by landmines, going through Western Sahara. Sahara’s resources are plundered, and its people continue to suffer. It is a crisis of great proportions and to host such critical conferences in Morocco is to give legitimacy to this systematic genocide and to bow down to the defiance of the Moroccan government. I encourage all young people who have received an invitation to attend this conference, and those of us who have been requested to submit papers, to respond to the emails they have sent us with the harsh condemnation that they deserve. We must refuse to be part of the spineless behaviour of the African Union Commission. Just because we were appointed to serve as AU African Youth Charter Ambassadors does not mean we must allow the AU use us. We must never sacrifice principle at the altar of convenience. We must boycott this thing. uSteve Biko angalila...
