The Akron school superintendent updated the board of education on the school building program – including the future of Ellet High School -- this week. The discussion on the buildings begins 50 minutes into this video. The Ellet discussion starts at about 1:07. Obviously lots of discussions need to be held with the Ellet community before anything’s final, but in short they want to spend $65 million to build a new Ellet behind the present building. The baseball field would need to be relocated, but the football stadium should be OK. The baseball field would be rebuilt on the front of the site after the present building is razed. Students would remain in the present building until the new one is complete. This is just my opinion, but looking at the superintendent’s presentation, I don’t see any way that once a new Ellet is built that the district has either enough students or funding to build new schools for Garfield, Kenmore and North. They’ll look at a middle school-high school combination like East and Firestone have and a partnership with a community college, but one or two of these high schools won’t survive. youtube/watch?v=9N9nlf8YOVg
