The All Volunteer Militay is not Working I was listening to NPR - TopicsExpress

The All Volunteer Militay is not Working I was listening to NPR this afternoon, and they were interviewing Andrew J. Bacevich, Jr, retired West Point graduate, class of 1969, retired Colonel and critic of the all-volunteer military. He stated that with an all-volunteer military ( see mercenaries) most Americans feel detachment from service, with less than 35% serving in uniform, paying lip service to servicemen but not ever experiencing it. Most Americans perception of military life comes from motion pictures, so stated Col. Bacevich He served and lost his only son, a first lieutenant in Iraq to an IED near Samarra in 2007. He stated that we resolve too easily on a military solution for any situation, since when you are a hammer everything looks like a nail. The use of the military has effectually been taken away from the American people and placed in the hands of congress and contractors. His solution is national service, not a draft, but every able bodied American between certain ages give a few years, some in military, others to a Civilian Conservation Corp, similar to what we had in the depression, repairing roads, fixing bridges and the like. Taking it one-step further, open this up as a fast track to solve the immigration issue. Reinstitute the The Lodge-Philbin Act which was a U.S. law, passed on 30 June 1950, which allowed for the recruiting of foreign nationals to serve in the military for a fixed number of years and they would receive preferential service for citizenship.
