The American Civil Liberties Union revealed on Friday that a student and his parents won their lawsuit against creationist teacher, Rita Roark, who told him he was stupid if he doesn’t believe in God. This teacher continued her racial discrimination against the Buddhist boy and his family by telling them that Louisiana is the Bible Belt, so if the boy (going by the name C.C.) wants to learn in an ungodly classroom, they should send him to a school where “there are more Asians.” The Sabine Parish Superintendent Sara Ebarb supported Roark’s judgment, but Judge Elizabeth Foote of the U.S. District Court, Western District of Louisiana did not. Judge Foote wrote: The District and School Board are permanently enjoined from permitting School Officials at any school within the School District to promote their personal religious beliefs to students in class or during or in conjunction with a School Event. School Officials shall not denigrate any particular faith, or lack thereof, or single out any student for disfavor or criticism because of his or her particular faith or religious belief, or lack thereof. Judge Foote also ordered that all school board members be trained by an ACLU-approved attorney on how to uphold the First Amendment in their school, emphasizing the psychological and development impact of religious discrimination on students.
