After seeing tonight’s election results I can ascertain a few definitive, and in my opinion highly accurate points about Memphis and politics. Memphis is a poor, uneducated city and this translates in politics as well. It’s an advantage for incubates in Memphis, because they don’t have to debate the issues. People in Memphis don’t educate themselves about the issues. Until those who have a higher concentration of education vote, the incumbents will always have an advantage. (see the vote percentages of the age groups) The older generation voted, 39 and below were basically no shows! :-( Candidates who lost tonight were in a catch 22 situation. Well most of them. It’s twice as hard to win in Memphis because as a candidate you have to educate the average voter on the issues (they won’t do it themselves) but, that takes capital. i.e. money! I’ve always voted but I didn’t always give money to the candidates that I thought I supported. My first time writing a check was for a good friend whom I believed in very much that was running for school board some years ago. This is why candidates who may have a subpar record or results can get elected, over and over here. We, as a whole don’t research and educated ourselves on the issues and we don’t put our money where our (mouth) support is. The older voters vote by name and familiarity, not necessarily issues. The younger voters pay more attention to their #LHHA #RHWA (are those accurate?) lol
