This evening’s pic 18-01-2015 Earlier today Lorna asked if anyone knew of a hut in Walkden for the Salvation Army. I don’t know of one being there myself. I was always led to believe the nearest citadel was in Farnworth. But Walkden does have a bigger claim to fame when in 1909 General Booth himself founder of the Salvation Army visited Walkden showing the importance of Walkden in Methodism. The picture below shows Walkden all decked out with bunting and General Booth arriving in rather flashy car. The visit was part of a six week tour of the country. He spoke for an hour in the Co-operative Hall to a packed audience before dining with Andrew Rothwell a local mill owner. This is when Walkden was a real town of importance on the ever developing industrial scene.
