The American Revolution may have succeeded, as Hannah Arendt argues, only because it was sustained by very special material conditions -- the widespread prosperity of a breakaway settler colony engaged in the conquest and exploitation of native lands and the expulsion of indigenous peoples; a slave economy in the southern colonies; a voracious appetite for new immigrant labor.
