The Annual Blessing of the Animals will take place on October 5, at 3 pm. All pets are welcome with leashes or protective containers. The tradition of blessing animals within liturgical churches began in the 1840’s during an epidemic in Austria, when farmers noticed their horses becoming sick and dying. Since the farmers were dependent upon the horses in their trade, the farmers approached their parish priests to ask that the horses be blessed. The custom of blessing animals arrived in the United States during the middle of the twentieth century. “The intent of blessing the animals,” stated the Rev. W. Frisby Hendricks, III, Rector of All Saints’ Church, “is not to make the pet better behaved, but to make the owner of the pet conscious of his or her responsibilities toward the pet”
