Shawshank Redemption (Drama) - Picked for the excellent plot, loosely based on Alexander Dumas novel The Count of Monte Cristo. Great performances by Morgan Freeman and Tim Robbins. Written by Stephen King, a bestselling author, well-known among book lovers. 2. The Prestige (Mystery Drama) - Brings back magic into movies, literally. Fresh plot and cool picturisation, bordering on the dark side. One of the best opening dialogues explaining the parts of a magic trick, now part of urban folklore. The Illusionist is a close second in this genre, with The Prestige winning due to its multi-layered characterisation and frequent twists. 3. The Machinist (Neo-Noir Thriller) - Now people will find this movie a surprise pick. If there was a genre of movies that leave you baffled, this would top the list. 4. Inglourious Basterds (Alternate History Drama) - Christoph Waltz arrives on the international scene and leaves the audience spellbound. An interesting take on post World War 2 events, presenting an alternate history thats grim as well as funny. THE best opening scene ever created - Col. Landa seeks out jews to kill in a French village. 5. The Dark Knight (Superhero Action Drama) - One of the finest characters ever created portrayed to perfection by Heath Ledger. Together with Batman Begins and The Dark Knight Rises, part of the best ever Superhero series. Fantastic dialogues, most of which have been made into memes all over social media. 6. The Departed (Crime Thriller) - An unusual story in which the audience always knows the answer to the question the movie is based on. Jack Nicholson and Leonardo Dicaprio present one of their finest roles ever. Matt Damon in his Bourne mode here too. A remake of a Hong Kong movie, no other Hollywood movie comes close to the plot. 7. Catch Me If You Can (Crime Drama) - Leonardo Dicaprio portrays a real life crook - and does a fabulous job. Interesting background of the whole cheque forgery business. This movie made MICR numbers common knowledge.
